The science of learning and behavior.

What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)?

Applied Behavior Analysis is a scientifically validated approach to understanding behavior and how it is affected by the environment. In this context, “behavior” refers to actions and skills, and “environment” includes any influence – physical or social – that might change or be changed by one’s behavior.

ABA therapy includes the use of a wide variety of teaching methods to help children acquire new skills efficiently. Effective ABA therapy can also help to decrease incidents of problematic behaviors (e.g., tantrums, elopement, self-injury, refusal to follow instructions, aggression, etc.). Behavioral assessments are used to identify the function of a behavior, before the treatment plan is developed and implemented. Treatment goals are focused toward learning socially-appropriate skills, and improving the child’s behavioral performance in the home, school and community settings.
